The Club Fair was a couple of weeks ago, and the Saint Stephen’s Upper School has more options than ever. Of course, there are the clubs you’ll find at any school, such as the Math, Chess, and Latin clubs; however, here are five unique clubs you may never see at another school.
Mycology Club
Coming off a very successful first year, the Mycology Club makes a comeback. Last year, the Mycology Club grew a variety of mushrooms here in the upper school, including bitter oyster, blue oyster, and lion’s mane. Club founder and Student Council President, Theo Frano, says, “Each mushroom had huge growth, and we plan to grow more new ones next year.” Mycology Club isn’t just watching mushrooms grow. Members learn what makes each mushroom special, and the health benefits each one contains.
Ecology Club
Frano also introduced the Ecology Club. “One of my personal passions is caring about the environment,” says Frano. The Club plans to do group projects to help protect the environment. One thing they plan to do is create a pamphlet that advocates for native planting and how to deal with invasive species in our community.
Board Game Club
Board Game Club is a chill, safe zone where you can go every Friday during lunch in Dr. Juengling’s room to relax and have fun. They play popular games such as Anomia and Coup.
“Board Game Club is just a nice time to come inside during lunch and have fun. It’s just a nice break in your day,” says sophomore and club founder, Pearson Walters.
Guitar Club
One of the few new clubs that met regularly last year was Guitar Club. They meet in Mrs. Hambrick’s room on Fridays to jam out. You don’t have to play guitar; you can also play drums or piano, and other instruments are welcome. Last year, they even held a couple of performances in the Falcon Courtyard. “I would like to create a band out of this,” says sophomore and club creator Matthew Bennettson. “I want to play at different places such as nursing homes.” Club sponsor, Mrs. Hambrick says, “It’s just everybody putting their brains together; it’s a show and tell of guitar.”
Red Cross Club
You may have heard of the Red Cross through a friend, or family member who has interacted with this national organization. The purpose of the American Red Cross is to protect life, health, and to ensure respect for human beings. At Saint Stephen’s, the Red Cross Club is planning on doing fundraising, service to the armed forces, international services, disaster response, preparedness/health and safety, and blood services. “I started the Red Cross club to raise awareness and help others,” says sophomore and club founder Danille Weathers.
Many schools across the country have many different clubs and many different leaders. At Saint Stephen’s, we have an assortment of unique clubs. I challenge you to join these unique clubs in order to be an active member of the Saint Stephen’s community.
