Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School, known for its K-12 program, hosts “Moving Up Day” every year to connect adjacent grade levels. For the US, this means the 8th graders spend a day touring and participating in upper school life.
Upper School Director Mrs. Conn hopes that the experience will help with the anxiety and wonder the 8th graders might be feeling.
“Being an 8th grader entering the Upper School can be intimidating,” Conn said. “This event helps them feel more comfortable and excited about the transition.”
This year, as a departure from previous years’ plan, 8th graders participated in electives like computer science, theater, journalism, and engineering alongside juniors and seniors, offering a glimpse into specialized courses beyond core subjects.
Freshman Hailey Castellucci, a freshman “guide,” reflected on her experience as a moving-up 8th grader last year. She emphasized the increased freedom in Upper School, advising students not to take it for granted.
“Moving Up Day helped me navigate the school when I was in 8th grade. I wanted to help others feel less nervous about this big step.”
Eighth-grader Natalie Maybon enjoyed exploring the electives and the presentations each teacher prepared.
“My favorite part was visiting the Marine Science Center,” Maybon said. “I’m excited to take it as a class one day.”
