Artist of the month: Jim Lin

Shreya Patel, Cultures Editor

Inspired by Marc Riboud, a prominent French photographer, Jim Lin has continued to shine in the field of photography. As this month’s featured artist, Lin has shared his story as an artist with us. Coming into Upper School, Lin knew he wanted to take photography. To be able to take this course, he enrolled in Art 1 as a prerequisite. Prepared and enlightened with the basics of art, Lin began his career in photography and has shined ever since.

Not afraid to show his love for photography, Lin has developed the habit of carrying around his camera when hanging out with friends and family. He noted, “Many photos are creative accidents and before you go to take a shoot you never really know what exactly what you’re getting yourself into.” The adventure that photography can capture entices Jim to spend his free time learning new techniques and skills in the field to improve his photography.

His passion and enthusiasm as well as his approach to art and design is prevalent in all of his works. Ms.Grady, art and photo teacher, noted that “Any project that Jim begins, he puts his entire heart and soul into it.” His attention to detail is uncanny. It is not uncommon to see Lin working away with Photoshop editing pictures during lunches and after school. The skills Lin develops while devoting a major portion of his time towards photography are seen in the constructive criticism he gives his peers. The Yearbook Staff even uses Lin as a design advisor knowing that he will give honest feedback and help with the photography and design of the pages.

One of Lin’s favorite works is a photo he took of Andie Herrig as a ballerina. Lin had Andie pose in front of various backgrounds including a beach setting as well as a run-down brick wall. The varied lighting in both settings allowed Lin to challenge himself during the shoot. From actions shots to portraits, Lin had taken roughly 500 photos by the end of the session. One reason Lin loves this shot of Andie so much is the unpredictability of it. He proudly recalled, “The lighting hitting the center of the photo was unintentional, but I am so happy that I captured it.”

His talent is clearly recognized by his family and friends. One of his best friends, Grace Moore, remarked “When you see Jim’s photography, you know it’s Jim’s photography before anyone tells you.” With the ability to capture all audiences, Lin has most definitely made his mark in the Saint Stephen’s art world.

Some of Lin’s favorite works are accessible on his blog (http://jlphotoo.blogspot.com/).  Inspired by the projects Ms.Grady has challenged photo students with, the blog shows the variety in Lin’s collection. For each project Lin is seen pushing the boundaries, always surprising his audiences with inspiring and incredible photography.
