Apple iPhone X vs Samsung Note 8: Battle for best phone of 2017
The already-hot Samsung and Apple debate continues with their new flagship devices.
October 5, 2017
I’m sure we’ve all heard of the two technology titans Apple and Samsung. Two competitive technology companies that every year, stir up an everlasting debate. Samsung’s phones, or Apple’s iPhones? More so than ever, these two companies have been head to head with Apple’s new iPhone X, and Samsung’s Note 8. When looking strictly at specs, the Samsung Note 8 outdoes the new iPhone X, but yet we’re still drawn to the iPhones… Why?
Apple’s main competitor Samsung, came out with the Note 8 back in August and has had a lot of the new iPhone X’s “novel” technology out for years. Seemingly, Apple is playing catch up with Samsung, as even their basic design is changing to replicate that of Samsung’s. The hype over the iPhone X’s new technology has already been out and topped by the Note 8.
The Note 8 has facial recognition, eye recognition, and touch sensors to unlock your phone, while the iPhone X relies solely on facial recognition, giving the consumer more freedom of choice. An unpopular decision by Apple to get rid of their headphone jacks in an effort to make their phones waterproof was unnecessary for Samsung.
The Note 8 has a headphone jack and is able to go underwater past one meter, while the iPhone X failed to keep their headphone jack and can only handle one meter of waterproofing as its max. Not to mention the fact that Samsung has had this waterproofing technology out on their phones for years now. Samsung’s Note 8 also beats Apple’s iPhone X in some basic statistics.
The Note 8 has 6GB of ram, while the iPhone X comes in at 3GB. In addition to these differences, the Note 8 has been out since August, while the release date for the new iPhone X is November 3rd. Apple’s new iPhone X comes in at the hefty $1000 – $1150 dollar range, while the Note 8 is $930.
Not only does Samsung beat Apple’s specs, but it also sells Apple their screens. Apple switched over to using Samsung’s screens after finally acknowledging their superiority, allowing the phones to have a better battery life and a more clear display.
Clearly, Samsung’s Note 8 is a step ahead of Apple’s iPhone X in almost all regards, so why do we continue to favor the iPhone? It all comes down to the overall feel of the iPhone. For people that care more about raw performance from their phones, then they should opt for the Note 8.
Ryan Thompson, a Saint Stephen’s senior stated he likes the “Note 8 because it is technologically superior to the iPhone, making it hand downs the better phone.”
Though Apple may be trying to catch up with Samsung’s technology, it ultimately takes the win in most people’s eyes. This is because of the overall feel of the iPhone.
Samson Yang, a Saint Stephen’s senior, said he likes “the iPhone because of its feel. When you use an iPhone, it feels and looks better than the Note 8, making it a more attractive phone, and ultimately a better buy.”
Apple’s IOS operating system creates a very user-friendly interface and has a nice attractive look to it. This proves that the majority of people care more about how their phone looks and feels, more than slightly better internal features. This favors Apple’s phones over Samsung’s, making it the favorable phone, and the better phone for most.
