Students heading back to classes on empty stomachs this week will be delighted with a new initiative this year: Panera breakfast in the Lunch Loggia.  Lunch Room Coordinator Mr. Ed McAvoy announced that Panera breakfast sandwiches and yogurt parfaits will be on sale for students and staff to purchase on Tuesday and Thursday mornings this year.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30am until the start of classes (7:55am), and again during the Cookie Break (9:35-10:15am). Sandwhiches and parfaits will set you back $6.25 via the EZ School lunch app, which can be preloaded with funds like a debit card.

Unlike lunches, customers won’t have to preorder.  Junior Patrick Van Eyck was encouraged that he had the option to buy on impulse, noting that being able to purchase breakfast on the fly could easily “could fix the issue [of preordering].”

While school breakfast is a staple at many larger schools, as a pilot program at SSES, Mr. McAvoy noted “it will be starting small. There will only be five parfaits and 20 scrambled egg and cheese sandwiches available to start.” He stressed that the Loggia room staff will evaluate demand as the year develops, and if “it isn’t popular, it [the program] will go away.”

Should Promposals be private?

This Panera experiment is certainly a small change to the Lunch Loggia’s menu, but if popularity of the warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies are anything to go off of, the initiative could transform the culture of campus. So if you’re craving something new as you settle into the routine, head down to the Lunch Loggia and make an SSES breakfast the most important meal of your day
