Saint Stephen’s celebrated the accomplishments of seniors Tori Biach, Brendan Worthy, and Yvonne Zheng last week. All three are senior athletes who will continue their athletic careers in college next fall.
In a short ceremony, Athletic Director Carlos Boothby commended Biach, Worthy and Zheng on their athletic accomplishments during their time at Saint Stephen’s. As their parents looked on, the three student-athletes signed letters of intent to their respective colleges.
Worthy, a golf star who helped the lead the varsity boys golf team to a district championship this year, will attend Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Biach, a four-year starter on the varsity girls volleyball team, will attend Northern University in Aberdeen, S.D. Zheng, also a golf star who led the varsity girls golf team to a regional championship, will attend UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif.
Worthy said he was excited about attending Lehigh, a place he said will allow him to “play Division 1 golf and get an excellent education.”
“I really liked the atmosphere. I’m from Pennsylvania, and [Lehigh’s] got a gorgeous mountainside and countryside campus,” Worthy said, adding, “I got to spend a night over there and meet the guys and the coaches…I just really gelled with them.”
Biach credited her teachers and volleyball coach Ms. Shameka Walker, who she said has always supported her aspirations.
“Coach Walker…helped me reach my dreams by always believing in my ability and pushing me to improve,” she said.
Zheng said she was excited to attend UCLA, a place she said won her over with its fitness and training program and excellent girls golf team. She thanked Saint Stephen’s for helping her earn a scholarship to UCLA
“Saint Stephen’s helped me a lot with the process,” said Zheng, “especially Mr. Yanelli and Mrs. Diamond.”
Biach also thanked Saint Stephen’s for helping her achieve her goal of playing volleyball at the college level.
“Saint Stephen’s has instilled in me a drive to succeed both in athletics and academics,” Biach said. “The school has always taught me to push for excellence.”
