Sports Preview: Varsity Football
September 7, 2018
After another state-championship winning season last year, the Falcon varsity football squad is geared up and ready to make another run at the title.
The road ahead won’t be an easy one for the Falcons. After losing four seniors that all moved on to play college ball. (Demetrius Davis to Stetson, Fred Billy to Iowa Central CC, Sidney Brown to Illinois, and Chase Brown to Western Michigan), there are a lot of gaps to fill.
Junior, Cam Vining said “We are going to miss those guys, but our expectations for the season haven’t changed. We’re still the team to beat for the state championship. We are going to need rely on the pass game a little more which is a change from the past, and when we do run, players like DJ (Clark) and I need to step up and get it done.”
New additions to the team including, junior, Xavier Williams, who plays quarterback, and senior, Oliver Leclezio, playing safety, will look to help the team win state for the third year in a row. Ollie said that he is very excited to contribute to a successful program.
The team opened up the preseason in Orlando against Lake Mary Prep. They breezed through that game winning 28-0. It seems as if they are ready to pick up right where they left off.
Last Friday, August 31st, the Falcons took on Cambridge Christian and the game got off to a slow start. The momentum suddenly shifted after Jordan Edwards, senior, picked off Cambridge’s quarterback late in the second period. Senior Noah LaBelle’s field goal and Junior Ty Barker’s receiving touchdown later followed, which proved enough to hold off the opponent. The Falcons finished the game with a 17-6 victory. This starts off their season on the right side of the win column with a 1-0 record.
The Falcons’ next game is this Friday in Orlando, where they will face off against Windermere Prep.
