Fantasy Football Start ’em Sit ’em: Week 9

Need weekly fantasy football advice? This list can make or break your matchup. (For point-per-reception leagues)

Cade Westberry, Sports Beat Writer

Quarterbacks

Keith Allison
Alex Smith playing the New York Jets in August.

Start ‘em QB: C.J. Beathard vs. OAK, Alex Smith vs. ATL

Both quarterbacks have a favorable matchup at home against poor defenses.

Sit ‘em QB: Matthew Stafford @ MIN, Ben Roethlisberger @ BAL

These QB’s are both on the road (in which they usually perform worse) against top-tier defenses.

Sleeper QB: Baker Mayfield vs. KC

The rookie quarterback is littered with offensive weapons at home this week against the worst defense in the league this year. The offense will have to pass to keep up with the red-hot Chiefs offense.

Runningbacks

Keith Allison
McCoy playing Washington in December of 2015.

Start ‘em RB: LeSean McCoy vs. CHI, Phillip Lindsay vs. HOU

These two running backs don’t play the easiest defenses this week, but have seen an increase in targets over the past couple of weeks. Shady McCoy is at home this week and Lindsay is a must-start for week 9 with Royce Freeman still out.

Sit ‘em RB: Jordan Howard @ BUF, Aaron Jones @ NE

Both running backs are on the road this week. Tarik Cohen is separating himself as the number one fantasy RB in Chicago and the Packers are playing a Patriots offense that is rolling, so Rodgers will have his hands full throwing it this week.

Sleeper RB: Austin Ekeler @ SEA

The Chargers are coming off a bye this week and with Melvin Gordon still dealing with a hamstring issue, whether he plays or not, Ekeler should get multiple touches against the Seahawks.

Wide Receivers

Keith Allison
Devin Funchess covered by Josh Norman in Washington earlier this month.

Start ‘em WR: Devin Funchess vs TB, Jarvis Landry vs. KC

Funchess is playing one of the worst (if not the worst) secondaries in the league this week, and Juice Landry is matched up with a terrible Chiefs defense at home.

Sit ‘em WR: Juju Smith-Schuster @ BAL, Calvin Ridley @ WAS

These receivers play difficult defenses on the road and are expected to have their numbers drop this week.

Sleeper WR: Kenny Golladay @ MIN

After yesterday’s block-busting trade that sent stud receiver Golden Tate to the defending champ Eagles, Golladay’s targets are guaranteed to increase against Minnesota’s secondary missing all-pro Xavier Rhodes.

Start’ em TE: Greg Olsen vs. TB, David Njoku vs. KC

Greg Olsen has caught a touchdown in two straight weeks and is playing a beat up Tampa defense. Njoku is playing a poor Chiefs defense at home and has emerged over the past couple of weeks as a preferred target for Baker Mayfield.

Sit ‘em TE: Austin Hooper @ WSH, Jimmy Graham @ NE

Hoop is playing an upgraded Washington secondary with the addition of Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix. Jimmy Graham should see a decrease in targets this week to keep up with the NE offense.

Keith Allison
Davis playing against HaHa Clinton-Dix in September. The two became teammates after a last-second trade before Tuesday’s deadline.

Sleeper TE: Vernon Davis vs. ATL

Davis has been inconsistent this year, but could put up big numbers this week against a poor defense.
