For the first time in St. Stephen’s history, a sports team has taken it upon themselves to support one of the biggest events of the year: Prom.
Organized by the volleyball players, the fundraiser centers around a volleyball tournament, which will take place in the gym on Thursdays during lunchtime. Anyone interested can enter a team of six ($10 per student), and the winning team gets to play against the varsity girls program. Due to cancellations caused by Hurricane Milton the volleyball games have been postponed to next week.
Although the tournament is coed and free to anyone who would like to join, the contest has been geared more to be a male version of powder-puff, according to captain Sophia Ierulli.
“I’d always thought it would be fun since we do powder puff for girls,” Ierulli said. “I figured the guys should try a girl’s sport.”
Although volleyball is a coed sport, at Saint Stephen’s, as in many high schools, it is only offered for girls. The fundraiser/tournament will give boys the opportunity to try the sport, while also raising money for prom.
An exciting variable to the tournament is that it doesn’t only include students— faculty and staff members are also encouraged to form their own teams.
In the end, the tournament will see the top Student Faculty volleyball teams square off, and the winner will play against the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
Head Volleyball Coach Frank Casaine has formed his own faculty team and is looking forward to competing in the tournament. Cassaine said his team is ready to crush it on the courts.
“I don’t see any other teams as competition, in fact, we told the football team they’re gonna need to bring their helmets because we are gonna hit so hard,” Casaine said.
The tournament is certain to be a competitive and exciting competition between the students and faculty so make sure to come out and watch on Thursdays during lunch. For questions on how to enter, ask Sophia Ierulli.
