Girls Weightlifting
The girls varsity weightlifting team, led by head coach Erik Schulz, finished the regular season 5-1, the strongest record for the program in school history. With the county meet approaching this Saturday, senior captain Annesley Flint is excited to get the post season started.
“I am excited for Saturday– to have my people pushing me and cheering me on. I’m excited to hit a PR and finish my senior season with a bang.”
At a well-attended senior night ceremony, the girls earned another last Thursday against Palmetto and Southeast High School.
Come out and support the Lady Falcons at Manatee this Saturday at 10am. Spectators are welcomed in at 8:20am. Following that, the District meet will be hosted here, in the Hoagland Arena, on Jan. 25.
Boys Soccer
The boys varsity soccer team, led by Oisin Crean, currently holds a 7-5-1 record. After a 2-1 loss against Shorecrest on Tuesday, the boys are ready to bounce back for senior night against Bayshore High this Friday.
Senior captain Gavin Winterhalter shared his thoughts on his upcoming final senior night.
“It’ll be a great night to celebrate the many years spent out on the field,” Winterhalter said.
Pop out this Friday at 6pm to watch our SSES Senior boys.
Girls Soccer
The girls varsity soccer team, led by head coach Tyler Cotton, and assistant coach, Trey Horne, now holds a record of 5-6-2. With a roster made up of primarily young players and newly recovered injured athletes, the team has been persevering through challenges this season.
The girls recently celebrated their seven seniors on senior night this past Tuesday, winning 1-0 against Bell Creek Academy.
The following game, which took place on Thursday, was a competitive match up against Palmetto High. Palmetto’s record stood at 10-5 going into the game so it was sure to be a tough match. Despite Palmetto’s impressive record the girls were able to hold them 0-0 all the way up until the last quarter.
The girls will now head into the district playoffs, with the first match on Jan. 22.
Freshman Piper Pullen said she is excited for their next game this Thursday, the last regular season match, as she gets to finish the year with her sister, senior captain Annabelle Pullen.
Boys Basketball
The varsity boys basketball squad, led by head coach Matthew Fletcher, currently holds a 4-14 record, playing in more games than any other winter sport. Despite having a difficult start to the season, the boys (and Ava) were in full gear this past weekend taking home two wins against Patel High School and Lakewood Ranch Preparatory Academy.
After a loss last night at Keswick Christian, the team will look to show up this weekend at a tournament in Port Charlotte. Senior starter Ava Rogers thinks the tournament will bring the team together.
“Our tournament should be a good team bonding experience which I think will really help us play together as a team. I think this will be a wonderful opportunity to show the progress we’ve made as a whole.”
