If you are the type of person who enjoys trying something outside of the norm and teasing your tastebuds with unique foods, look no further than Downtown Sarasota’s newest restaurant, Louie’s Modern, which opened April 3.
This restaurant puts a whole new spin on gourmet food and is set in the very heart of Downtown Sarasota. Its sleek, cutting edge appearance makes it very appealing.
When guests first step through the large glass doors, a fusion of elegance and timeless sophistication first meet their eyes in the form of a large dining room, open kitchen, full cocktail bar and friendly waitstaff. What I enjoyed most about the decor was the feeling that I was at an upscale, modern restaurant with clean lines and sleek wood detailing. However, at the same time, Â there were also aspects of the restaurant, such as the waitstaffs’ casual jeans attire and the generally simplistic atmosphere, which gave the interior more of a casual feel.
When I looked at the menu initially, I was concerned that I would have trouble finding anything remotely appetizing. From quail eggs to crab cake soufflés, the menu is very eclectic, to say the least. However, after having a helpful waiter make suggestions, I came across some items that looked interesting to try.
My table first ordered appetizers of smoked trout deviled eggs, a mushroom pasta and lamb meatballs. The appetizer dishes at Louie’s are rather small, so we ordered several. Surprisingly, the deviled eggs were my favorite because they had the right amount of spice and smoky flavor, but weren’t overpowering. On the other hand, the lamb meatballs, which I had been looking forward to because I enjoy Greek food, were overcooked.
The entrees were very delicious. The menu consists of a variety of options including entrees, gluten-free items and wood-fired flatbreads. Perhaps the entree I enjoyed the most was the pulled pork pizetta. This fusion of mexican and barbeque on a small pizza was very flavorful.
With the exception of the main entrees, the price range for the rest of the menu items was fairly reasonable, considering the upscale atmosphere of the restaurant. The entrees were rather large. However, if you order appetizers or desserts, be prepared for smaller portions.
This is what I found when ordering dessert. However, by that point in the meal, I was already full from the rest of the meal. My table ordered a small apple crumb dessert, but it wasn’t amazing. I don’t suggest stopping in the restaurant just for dessert because you may be disappointed by the portion sizes and variety of options.
Perhaps most unique and intriguing about Louie’s Modern are all of the amenities, in addition to the regular dining experience. Adjacent to the restaurant is a new special events venue called The Francis, which can hold up to 250 people at various special events. There is also a Barista Bar just outside of the restaurant, which serves coffee drinks and light breakfast snacks at an outdoor patio daily.
This new downtown hotspot is a restaurant where I will definitely return. Its trendy and refreshing atmosphere is just what this area of downtown Sarasota needed, and it appeals to a wide range of ages. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and walked away satisfied by the quality of the food, restaurant setting and genuinely friendly waitstaff.
