Baseball’s big dance: a guide to the World Series
October 31, 2014
It’s the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals battling it out for arguably the most significant trophy in all of sports, the World Series. Ever since 1903 teams have been competing for this magnificent championship. The World Series is such an important event, as stated by player and future hall of fame player Derek Jeter, because “You don’t just accidentally show up in the World Series.” The World Series is not known as “our national past-time” for no reason. It is full of drama, passion, and most of all great teams, and this World Series is no exception.
The Cinderella team of this championship is the Kansas City Royals. The Royals haven’t made it to the Series since 1985, almost 30 years ago. Recently the Royals have been in a slump and have not been doing well but they were determined that this year would be a change. With an 89-73 record they assured their spot as a wild card. The wild card game led to a close 9-8 win over the Oakland Athletics. Salvador Perez and his walk off single led to an improbable comeback victory. The next four games were a breeze as the Royals swept the Los Angeles Angels in the American League Division Series (ALDS). This was another huge surprise for the baseball world. Then the Royals played the Baltimore Orioles. Amazingly, they swept the birds for the American League Championship Series (ALCS). These sweeps marked the quest by the Kansas City Royals for the World Series.
The Giants have been a top-notch team in recent memory. Like the Royals, they had to play the wild card single-elimination game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Without a hitch, the Giants defeated them. Next, it was time for the NLDS versus the Washington Nationals. The Giants took the series 3-1. In the NLCS the Giants beat the Cardinals in a series of 4-1.
As the series surges on, two of the best teams in the MLB are face off. Who will take the prize? Who will forever write their names in the history books? Will it be the Cinderella team, or the dominant team?
The first game of the World Series was a whopping 7-1 win for the Giants. This was not very surprising to most. Everything was against the Royals. It would have been easy for them to hang their heads, but they refused. In game two, the Royals came back and pulverized the Giants 7-2. Surprisingly, the Royals jumped to a series lead by winning game three: 3-2. The mighty Giants weren’t going to let this happen. They came back in game four and put an assault on the Royals by winning 11-4. The series was now tied at two games a piece. The teams met in Kansas to play game five. The giants defeated the Royals 5-0. Next is game six. What will happen? Will the Royals beat the Giants to force a game seven, or will the Giants claim yet another World Series?
