21-year-old Jordan Spieth wins Masters; adds green jacket to his closet

Just last week,  21 year old Jordan Spieth was not commonly known in the sporting world. He had only won two small tournaments as he headed into the 2015 Masters.

The Masters is arguably the most prestigious tournament in the golfing world. The 21 year old Spieth was not expected to place very highly. The youngest person ever to win the Masters was Tiger Woods, who won the green jacket when he was just 18.  But Tiger Woods is arguably the greatest golfer in history. Being one of the youngest players in the tournament, Spieth was not expected to finish well but the young phenom appeared to be a driven man, motivated not only to place highly in the tournament but to win it.

In an interview with CNN following the Masters, Spieth spoke about a touching subject: his autistic sister named Ellie. Spieth said “How has she shaped my upbringing? Well, she’s the most special part of our family.” He also noted he dedicates the jacket to her, and “might let her try it on when he sees her again.”

As far as golf goes, Spieth was untouchable in Augusta this weekend. After the first round, Spieth was an amazing 8 under par. People started wondering if the young Texan would come out on top. In the second round of play, Spieth scored a record 14 under par in one round. He was now in the driver’s seat and remained there for the rest of the tournament.

At the end of the 3rd round, Spieth led by 4 points going into the final day. With only 18 holes left, the question remained: “Would the young star be able to hold on to the lead, or would he crumble under the crippling pressure of the Masters?”

When the final round came to an end, Jordan Spieth had won it all and proved all the doubters wrong. He was the second youngest to have the honor of donning the coveted green jacket. Spieth scored one of the lowest (and best) scores in Masters history with a -18.

Just trailing Spieth was one of the greatest golfer of all-time, Phil Mickleson, who finished 14 under par. People have now begun to compare Jordan Spieth to the legend Tiger Woods.  Now, the question has become, “Will Spieth live up to his hype, or is he just having his 15 minutes of fame?”
