With the departure of former Upper School Director Mr. Andrew Forrester last year, a new role has emerged for long-time head coach, English teacher, and Department Chair, Mr. Jamie Moore, as the Interim Upper School Assistant Director. Moore joins Interim Upper School Director Mrs. Anna Conn, forming an experienced administrative team that is poised to make major changes in policies this year.
In his new position, Mr. Moore is responsible for overseeing student life and academics. From ensuring each student has a schedule they’re pleased with to making sure each student’s opinion and voice is heard, Mr. Moore has a busy year ahead of him.
When asked about the selection process for this role, Moore commented on his involvement over the years.
“I’ve been engaged with pretty much every part of the life of the school,” Moore said. “I think I know every part of the life of the school really well.”
With four years of coaching, twenty-four years involved with the English Department, and roles in student council and on IQ trips, Moore knows Saint Stephen’s like the back of his hand.
As well as Moore, Mr. Mark Santa Maria has been at the school for a number of years and commented on how good of a job he thinks Mr. Moore will do in this new role.
“He’s been here for a very long time,” Santa Maria said. “He’s very good at knowing what people need and he’s very good at knowing what the school needs.”
When asked what students can expect from Mr. Moore in this new position, he referred to the major changes that students have already seen to the policies this year.
“One of the things we’re trying to do this year,” Moore said, “is simplify some of the policies but also make everyone accountable with the dress code and attendance.”
Mr. Moore also mentioned that he would be observing classes to provide teachers with positive feedback and mentoring.
After 24 years as an English teacher and department chair, Mr.Moore reflected on how this role might affect his teaching life.
“I’m still teaching AP Literature and I’m still working as the English Department Chair,” Moore said. “That’s been the hardest part of taking this job. I miss being in the classroom.”
